EDUCATIONAL VISITS: THE ART OF THE ANIMALS AND THE LITTLE PRINCES IN HISTORY
We have completely revamped our approach to Educational Activities for school children. The aim of bringing art and culture to the island’s students is unchanged but the process has been modified in that we are providing the teachers with the material to enable them to prepare the children before they visit our museum and another set of documents so that the students can work in their classrooms after their visit. All this is available only in Catalan on CD or can be downloaded directly from our website. There will be a prize every year for the best pupil’s answers. Why should young people be encouraged to visit our Museum/Foundation? The fact that they will be able to have a first contact with an art centre in a bucolic, pristine natural setting should help them to create a habit of a lifetime while connecting to the artwork they will be shown. They will begin by entering the Aljibe an underground space where the Nins Collection – Portraits of children of the 16th to 19th centuries is shown. These paintings are grouped by countries: England, Italy, France, Spain and Mallorca, Holland, Germany and Eastern European countries. By looking at these pictures they will be able to see how the children in other times behaved and were dressed and with adequate explanations which will be given by their guides they will be able to understand the way these often Royal children were brought up, taught and intermarried thus giving an overview of the History of Europe at the time. Following this immersion in relatively recent history we go back even further in time. The Sculpture Park of monumental granite animals each inspired by a different model dating from an ancient civilization allows students to appreciate such universal cultures through new forms. At the end of the park 12 large natural megaliths are placed in an ellipse to form Las Estelas del Sol, a wink at Stonehenge and other such monuments. Lastly the visiting students will descend a stairway into another underground crypt called Sokrates. Here the interplay between ancient artifacts from Nepal, Tibet and Peru are in dialogue with contemporary art works. Works on display by Miquel Barceló, Ferrán García Sevilla, José María Sicilia, Gerhard Merz and some by Ben Jakober / Yannick Vu constitute the interaction with the tribal pieces. The seminal CO2 by Dolores Vita made with coal dust draws attention to the grave problem of our eco-system. An added joy in May and June is the visit to the Hortus Conclusus when more than 100 varieties of old roses are in bloom.
