William Kentridge chose art as a career, but politics and theatre are deeply rooted in everything he does. His parents Sydney Kentridge and Felicia Geffen, both lawyers, were unfaltering opponents of apartheid. His father defended Nelson Mandela at his 1956 trial. He also represented two other Nobel Prize-winners, Desmond Tutu and Albert Luthuli, as well as the family of Steve Biko, who died due to police brutality in Johannesburg in 1977.
